Ceramics
I’ve been doing Ceramics for four years. I started ceramics as just a part of my school’s activity. My school has an elective ceramics classes and I thought it was an interesting, so I joined. When I started, I had zero knowledge about ceramics and didn’t even know the difference between wheel clay and recycled clay. Little by little, I learned new things every day and gained interests in ceramics. What I love about ceramics is the idea of making something from dirt. If you think about all the ceramic pots and vases, they were just dirt before. Eventually the dirt was picked up by someone from the ground and made into clay. Then someone made the clay into a shape of pots and vases. I also like how you can create basically anything in ceramics. I’ve made a trophy and currently in process of making a guitar out of ceramics. This is why I love ceramics and can’t see myself stop doing it anytime soon.

For this vase, I glazed it with my favorite color, blue. With the clear crystal glaze underneath, I was able to show the flowy glaze texture on this vase.

This flower vase was glazed with my signature glaze. I absolutely love this color. I imagined the colors of forests and grass when I glazed this piece. But what I love the most is the slight rainbow-ish color effect that shines on the surface. That makes this glaze very special.

This is a trophy that I made for myself imagining the Polka Dot Jersey from the Tour de France. The Polka Dot Jersey is given to the best climber in the Tour de France. Since I love going uphill, I thought I should make a trophy for myself. The Polka Dot Jersey is a white jersey that has lots of red dots on it so that’s why I chose the color white and red.

I always like to make small vases. This is a tiny flower vase that I made for a special family in Japan. The deep green glaze gives this tiny vase a distinct look. I found that this glaze really stands out when it is applied to small pieces, so I decided to apply this glaze on some of my small pieces too. One of them is my rice bowl which you can see right next to this.

This is a rice bowl that I made for myself. Rice is my favorite food and I wanted to treat rice nicely, so I made this bowl. The deep green glaze makes this rice bowl unique since not many rice bowls have this kind of look

The glaze on this flower vase is very interesting. There are two glazes on this vase. One is a clear crystal glaze and the other glaze is another type of crystal glaze called, “Macro-crystalline zinc glaze.” Because this vase consists of two different glazes, you can see the clear crystal glaze underneath the Macro-crystalline zinc glaze almost like a curtain. In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting vases that I made.

For this vase, I imagined Sakura which means cherry blossom in Japanese. I splattered pinkish-white color on a black glazed base and that made it look like Sakura petals falling in this vase.

I imagined the waves in the ocean when I made this flower vase. I thought about some of the people that I know from Japan who live near the beach and surf all the time. For them, this vase can be very relatable and perhaps can represent their home. I’m not a big fan of water activities, but I love photographing ocean waves and watching surfers.

This pot was glazed with greenish-white glaze. However, instead of applying the glaze with a paint brush, I spray painted the glaze onto this pot and it turned out really nice. I love how there is a bit of orange color added to this pot and that gives this pot a really warm and cozy vibe. Because of this, I named this pot Nukumori, meaning warmth in Japanese.
